Volunteer through MSTi

Host a Site Visit:MSTi youth

Open your company doors to an afterschool science club and give a child the opportunity to see firsthand what your work entails. Host companies are asked to give a tour of their workplace by providing hands-on activities and interaction with various staff, underwrite the cost of transporting 10-15 kids to and from site visits at their company, and provide refreshments (i.e. cookies and juice).

Requirements:

  • One or more afternoon during afterschool hours
  • Transportation to and from the company
  • A snack for youth participants
  • A brief follow up meeting to debrief the visit (approximately 30 minutes each)

Co-facilitate a Science Club:

Support a staff member as they teach one of the MSTi curricula. This opportunity gives employees an in-depth experience with hands-on science in afterschool and allows for adult-youth relationship building through the duration of the lessons.  This opportunity is available for individuals or teams of individuals.

Requirements:

  • Commitment by individual or team of individuals once a week over a specified period of time, usually 8 weeks (dependent on the schedule of the afterschool site)

Informal Science Club Visits:

Be a guest at an MSTi afterschool site. During this one-time visit, an employee or group of employees may participate in the “science club” hour to assist with an experiment or be ‘taught’ by the kids. Adults can informally talk about what drew them to science and/or technology, what they currently do at their place of employment, and offer suggestions and advice during the experiments.

Requirements:

  • At least one visit to a MSTi program, during afterschool hours

ePals Mentor Program:

Serve as a mentor with MSTi’s electronic mentoring program. Volunteers and youth will be prompted via email to discuss questions about science, technology, and career-related topics.

Requirements:

  • Attendance to orientation session
  • One face-to-face meeting with the youth participants
  • Regular email exchanges with youth participants (approximately 2x per month, January - June)
