The Workers Pathways to Self-Sufficiency Act
Today, the Boston Business Journal ran an article on legislation that aims to address the need for expanded state investments in the education and training of low-income workers. The legislation, initiated by United Way partner agency Crittenton Women’s Union, is called The Workers Pathways to Self-Sufficiency Act of 2009 and it includes:
- $4.5 million in funding for the Educational Grant Rewards Program for working adults, including college grants and services; and
- Improvements in Department of Transitional Assistance policies and procedures that will encourage the pursuit of vocational education training by public assistance recipients.
According to CWU, "This far-reaching legislation will not only help workers gain the skills they need to reach economic self-sufficiency, but will also provide Massachusetts with the educated workforce necessary to build and maintain a vibrant economy. "
More to come as I hear more...
