Short Takes
Boston predicted to have the 5th biggest job loss in 2009: The BBJ reports on a joint study by the U.S. Conference of Mayors and The Council for the New American City. Our area’s unemployment rate is predicted to rise to 6 percent by the end of the year, making us 5th in the country for job loss.
93 year old freezes to death after utility shut off: A 93-year-old Michigan man froze to death this week inside his home days after the
power company limited his use of electricity because of
unpaid bills. If you or anyone you know are having a hard time meeting your utility bills, please call 2-1-1 for help.
Super Bowl Single Girl: A woman in Manhattan is trying to raise $3 million to buy a Superbowl ad so she can find love. She’s raised $6200 so far and if she doesn’t reach her $3 million goal, she’s donating it all to UW. We're so close to Valentine's that it seems wrong to hope for lovelessness...but $2.9 million or less could help a lot of people... Good luck to her either way. I'm glad she thought of UW.

Moving to Florida
Dear Visitor,
Some of the questions you ask are very difficult to answer without being speculative. Others require comparative research about Florida not readily available to me.
The laws, services, and benefits will vary no matter where you go. I suggest you start by contacting the Florida Independent Living Council (877) 822-1993 toll free , or one of the Centers for Independent Living in the state to pick their brain about resources for people with disabilities. The State of Florida also has an Agency for Persons with Disabilities and oversees independednt living facilities in the State. Nevertheless, I found some information on the web stating that there are 6,000 people on a waitlist for services!
Again, I encourage you to start with the Council. I'm sure they'll be able to guide you.
good luck!

Moving? Is it a bad time to move to Florida?
Hello,I have a mobile section 8 voucher for disability. Is this a bad time to move to Florida? The winter does a number on my health.I do not know the housing or disabilty laws down there..are they different than Mass? How can I tell if I am moving into a building/home that will be foreclosed? Here or out of state? I have no family or support here or in Fla.Is one county in Fla better than another for rights, health care etc..?I do have an excellent specialist here in Mass.I have tried to get information from my worker but she says she is just housing which I understand. How does someone disabled move and find information.I would not want to end up in a bad area. any suggestions?
