Home without heat, what about others?
Moving back to Boston from warmer climates I can honestly say this winter is really giving me a run for my money. I guess I partially expected that- what I didn’t expect is that it would be as cold in my house as it is outside on many days.
My sister and I rent in Roxbury- our place is a place we initially loved until the weather turned cold and our heat barely circulated. Many days since mid November it has been so cold that we have retreated to our bedrooms where we have space heaters (an issue in itself) despite the fact that we keep the heat turned up to 82 degrees. So after our multiple requests to our landlord were ignored we finally took matters into our own hands. We contacted Greater Boston Legal Services, (a United Way partner agency) put our rent in escrow and had the City come out and do an inspection. Exactly what we thought the city found the property with insufficient heat- which was what we needed to hear since we were looking into moving at this point anyway.
This whole experience has really made me reflect on those who are in homes with limited to no heat this winter- I can first hand sympathize with them and understand how miserable it makes one feel. But beyond that- what if you don’t know the proper channels to follow or like my downstairs neighbors don’t have the means to move out quickly due to financial situations. What happens to people in that situation ?

Families
Families who don't have knowledge about the web of support out there have a harder time knowing what to do. It can take longer to find help and a resolution. Moreover, you were able to pick up and leave. The stress of having to tough it out while the legal channels work themselves out can be all-consuming. Even for people who are doing fine financially, a move always involves a lot of effort, stress, and money.

Thanks Lanita
Thanks Lanita, You are doing a great job with letting others know how they can get in touch with agencies that will be able to help them, especially during this winter. It has been a lot of snow and extremely cold.

Thanks Lanita, You are doing
Thanks Lanita, You are doing a great job with letting others know how they can get in touch with agencies that will be able to help them, especially during this winter. It has been a lot of snow and extremely cold. We really like people like you that will be able to speak up and use there skills to help others. You seem to be a person that don't mind speaking out and letting others know how you feel and your background up bringing must have had some kind of affect towards that. Your parents must be very proud of you. Keep up the good works and keep warm because I don't think winter is completely over yet:)
Thanks, Lanita.
Those of us with means aren't always free from running into problems like this. The difference is that we have more options to rectify the situation. I think it's great that you posted this to remind us all to be grateful for what we have (financially, socially, and otherwise) and remember that some of our neighbors could use support from their community. After all, despite our differences, we all want some of the same things in life - a safe place to call home is at the top of that list.
