During spring break, hundreds of student volunteers from across the United States team up with United Way to make a meaningful impact in communities across the country. Locally, a dozen "Alternative Spring Breakers" from Boston College are participating with United Way and our partner agencies through hands on projects and learning about the nonprofits in and around Greater Boston.

After an in-depth orientation yesterday with United Way, the student volunteers visited the preschoolers at Ellis Memorial this morning and built literacy kits for families in need this afternoon at Tsoi/Kobus & Associates.

This week, they will also tour Roca in Chelsea, canvass Lynn to promote United Way's 211 service, discuss youth graduation/dropout rates with students, meet with Senator Jamie Eldridge regarding public policy, learn how to engage additional college students, and meet with local corporations to learn about their CSR and philanthropic work.
